The Effects of COVID-19 and Digital Literacy Among Immigrants
Abstract
This paper discusses the effect of the digital divide, specifically, the lack of digital literacy among immigrants. For decades, immigrants have faced great barriers in terms of accessing the internet, technological devices, and digital skills development. Access to technology and having digital skills is important for various aspects of life such as education, employment, and healthcare. This was especially seen during the COVID-19 pandemic when the lack of access and skills prevented immigrants from applying to jobs, accessing proper healthcare such as vaccines, and assisting their children with schoolwork. While there are educational programs in place and financial assistance provided by the federal government and community organizations, it will take additional research, collaboration, and funding to fully close this aspect of the digital divide.
